Whether you're starting on your first vegetable gardening, planning to plant flowers fronting your house or exploring the lasagna gardening method, the top three considerations that you have to keep in mind are these - soil quality, water access and weather. If all of these three factors work well together, then you are guaranteed to have a hassle-free gardening work.

Choosing the right site, whether in a vacant lot or in your garden, is an essential consideration. Make sure that the soil is perfect for the kind of plants, flowers or crops you intend to plant, the weather is fine (not too hot and not too shady) and there's a convenient access to water. Other complicated considerations that a first-time gardener may come across includes composting techniques, pest control, pesticide applications and many more can be learned along the way.

Everything that you need to know in planting and cultivating a home garden is now fairly accessible these days. The good thing about this all is that most of the instructional materials are not just formatted in a do-it-yourself way, but are also highly accessible and free of charge. Effective Lawn Maintenance Tips That Work

MTD Yard Machines Lawn Mower

Taking care of your lawn and having a healthy, well maintained lawn is an important step as a homeowner. Not only does this help you feel better about your house because you keep it up better and people comment on it, but if you are trying to sell your home this is going to greatly increase the value of your home because it adds curb appeal.

You can hire a lawn maintenance company, but for the most part homeowners can take care of their lawn on their own, with the right supplies and a few helpful tips.

The first step is getting the supplies and tools that you need. A lawnmower, gardening tools such as a shovel and hoe, and fertilizer, for instance, as the basic supplies. Depending on whether you have a vegetable garden, flower garden, hedges, or other decorations, you may need to add or subtract items from this list. One of the most important tips is to mow your grass the proper length. Many people have the misconception that you are supposed to mow the grass as short as possible, when this is actually not the case. Instead, you should mow rather high, keeping the grass about 2.5 to 3 inches high. Always mow around on the grass in different directions, rather than straight back and forth in lines, as this cuts more leaf surface and also reduces soil compaction.

Another important tip is in regards to proper fertilization. You should test the soil and use these results to help you determine what is needed in order to make the soil healthier.

With these and other helpful, easy tips, anyone can start taking proper care of their lawn and actually enjoy doing it. Taking proper care of your lawn does not have to be a huge challenge, and you can do it easily enough and without having to spend a ton of money.

Selecting The Right Lawn Care Tools

Selecting the right lawn care tools will often depend upon the size and location of the yard. Those who live in sunny areas with little to no shade will probably be more concerned about watering and hydration of the grass. Yards with trees and plenty of shade will require periodic removal of leaves, tree branches and other debris.

A sprinkler or sprinkler system may be essential for lawn care in warmer climates. If the yard is small, one sprinkler may cover the entire surface, or at least the areas the get the driest. For larger yards, more than one device may be needed. For lawns that have plenty of shade, a garden hose and sprayer may be all that is needed, to give the yard a good soaking 2 or 3 times a week, during hot weather. An outdoor hose is a good idea for watering flower beds and planting areas.

A good rake that removes debris and fallen leaves should be an essential in the garage or gardening shed. Both plastic and metal varieties get the job done, though the steel tines are more flexible and may get smaller debris left behind by plastic models. There are leaf blowers that can help keep the yard clean. They will not remove large twigs or fallen branches. This may still need to be done by hand or with a rake.

Pruning shears and trimmers are essential for those who grow various perennial or annual plants and flowers or who have shrubs and small trees on the lawn. A two wheeled spreader is often needed for those who must add fertilizer or other nutrients to large portions of grassy areas. Whether a push mower or a lawn tractor is used will depend on the size of the lawn. Those with small, flat areas of grass may even choose one of the newer eco-friendly reel mowers than requires neither gas nor electricity to operate.

Different Ways a Tree Can Be Pruned

Tree branches with snow

Pruning trees is done by professionals and novices alike in order to maintain the health of a tree. It is natural for trees to shed their branches when they become weak or get ripped down by the wind. By coaxing a tree into a certain shape, we can increase its strength and health. Pruning removes any unneeded/crossing/dead branches which could hinder the growth of a tree. Trees which are obstructing driveways or signs need to be tidied up to abide by local ordinances.

There are three basic methods for pruning: thinning the crown, raising the crown and lowering the crown. What is the crown? It is the part of the tree where leaves and branches reside.

Thinning the crown is the most common procedure and is very healthy for the tree. Branches are removed all throughout the crown in order to allow more light and air to enter. Thinning needs to be done to the entire tree at once, not only at a specific spot. If you only trim the inside, for example, you can get an effect known as “lion’s tailing”, where tufts of leaves grow on the ends of a branch because that is the only area which can receive light.

Raising the crown is done when there are too many low-hanging branches on the bottom of a crown. These branches can obstruct furniture and paths and should be removed. By pruning trees like this, you promote upward growth of the tree, making it taller over time.

Lowering the crown is only done in extreme cases where the tree is growing into power lines or houses. This method removes large, thick branches and makes it more difficult for the tree to heal. This job is also one of the most dangerous and should be handled by professionals. Large pieces of tree will fall down during the process. It can help to use garden tool organizers to keep your pruning tools ready to go.
